How the HMO model works

Under the FAVORIT SANTE HMO model, you first contact your Medbase Health Centre or a SWICA partner practice. You and your doctor then discuss the best way to proceed, decide on the right specialist and hospital if needed, and agree on any further treatment measures to take.

Frequently asked questions about the HMO model

With the HMO model you get an attractive discount on your premiums and the same benefits as under the STANDARD basic insurance. The only difference is the choice of contact point: under the HMO model, your first point of contact for medical matters is always a Medbase Health Centre or a SWICA partner practice.

  • Appointments with an eye doctor or a gynaecologist
  • When getting treatment during a temporary stay abroad

If possible please always contact a SWICA partner practice or Medbase Health Centre first. In an emergency you can go directly to an emergency centre or hospital. Afterwards inform your Medbase Health Centre or SWICA partner practice as soon as possible about any emergency treatment. The doctors and medical staff at the santé24 telemedicine centre will be also glad to advise you on +41 44 404 86 86, around the clock.

When you switch from the STANDARD basic insurance plan to the HMO model, SWICA gives you a discount of between 9.5% and 21.5% on your premiums. The exact discount depends on where you live, your age and your chosen excess. Below, we have provided examples of how the minimum and maximum possible discounts are determined under the HMO plan:

  • Minimum discount: Adult aged 26 or over, living in Schwyz, excess: CHF 300, no accident cover, standard premium: CHF 470.40, with 9.5% discount: monthly premium of CHF 425.70.
  • Maximum discount: Adult aged 26 or over, living in Lausanne, excess: CHF 300, no accident cover, standard premium: CHF 655.90, with 21.5% discount: monthly premium of CHF 514.90.

The HMO plan is not offered in the following cantons: Glarus, Graubünden, Jura and Valais.
