SWICA is more than just a provider of health and accident insurance. As a healthcare organisation, our customers’ wellbeing is front and centre of all that we do. Our mission is to help them stay healthy, get healthy or live well even with a health restriction.
As a healthcare organisation, we focus on people and their health.
In basic insurance, private customers can choose between the standard model as defined in law and a range of alternative insurance models, and select their own excess. You can add supplementary insurance products onto your basic insurance as suits your needs. When it comes to hospitalisation insurance, there are also suitable cover options for all circumstances.
Corporate customers can take out daily sickness benefits and accident insurance with SWICA. What all our offers and services have in common is that we deliver them with commitment, a solution-oriented approach and superior service quality.
Our goal is our customers’ health. The more personal responsibility you take, the lower your premiums. We encourage our customers to regularly invest in their health and fitness, and holders of supplementary insurance products can claim up to 1300 francs per year towards such activities (see detailed information).
As a pioneer in health promotion and prevention, SWICA offers a bonus programme in the form of the Benevita health coach, which supports our customers’ individual efforts. The app contributes to strengthening their health literacy in relation to exercise, nutrition and wellbeing. Customers earn points through health-promoting activities, and can then use these to receive premium discounts on certain supplementary insurance plans, turn them into digital vouchers or donate them to charitable projects.
To promote health literacy among the employees of our corporate customers, we provide advice and support to companies on establishing and enhancing professional occupational health management (OHM) practices and on planning and implementing effective measures to promote good health in the workplace. We also offer our corporate customers group contracts, enabling their employees to enjoy SWICA’s comprehensive offering and high service quality on favourable terms for their private health insurance.
Medical assistance around the clock: The doctors and medical professionals at santé24 are there to offer you expert advice on all of your questions concerning prevention, illness, accidents and maternity – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
We offer conventional and complementary medical benefits for sick or injured people. SWICA’s philosophy has always been to incorporate the best of both approaches. When people undergo examinations or medical interventions, they should be able to trust that they will be neither over nor undertreated. We are firm believers that the quality of a patient’s treatment increases when a coordinated approach is taken, and we know from experience that unnecessary costs such as duplicate examinations can be avoided.
The Medbase medical centres and SWICA partner practices are an important, high-quality pillar of SWICA’s holistic offering. They provide our customers with direct access to a network of doctors and therapists. The centrally located centres and practices cooperate closely with general practitioners and specialists.
Through the Benecura app, we offer customers with symptoms of illness a digital SymptomCheck, including recommendations on what to do next. If there is a follow-up call with our santé24 online practice, customers decide for themselves whether they wish to release the information provided in the SymptomCheck.
Employees of our corporate customers who are ill or have suffered an accident also receive intensive support from the care management team, who can provide assistance until they have recovered and reintegrated into normal working life.
Not everything in life can always go back to the way it was after an illness or an accident. We are at your side to provide advice, helping you to live as independently as possible. We bring together telemedicine, online coaching programmes, pharmacies, GP practices and specialist physicians to deliver professional care with the minimum of hassle. If someone has a health restriction that may require regular medical care, it is all the more important that the care they receive is fully adapted to their situation.
We embody solidarity by encouraging health-promoting behaviour, helping people who are sick or injured to recover quickly and assisting people with health restrictions in maximising their quality of life.
We focus on effectiveness and efficiency to keep administrative costs as low as possible; we achieve this by managing our fixed assets responsibly, putting money into investments that make us even better, entering into fruitful partnerships, digitising processes that do not need human input and continuously building our employees’ knowledge and skills. By doing this, we can ensure that the healthcare of tomorrow remains affordable for everyone.
Health is our most valuable asset, which is why SWICA is committed both to promoting health and to its customers personally.
SWICA’s Strategic Mission Statement
1992: Four health insurance companies merge to form the SWICA Healthcare Organisation:
1994: Health centres are developed and family doctor models promoted.
1996: SWICA launches a comprehensive corporate insurance range (daily sickness benefits and accident insurance) for companies.
1998: SWICA’s professional care management service is developed.
2000: Global Care, the insurance policy for Swiss nationals temporarily or permanently living abroad, is launched.
2005: SWICA reaches the milestone of one million insured persons.
2008: The santé24 online practice is launched.
2009: SWICA continues to expand its health centres and strengthens primary care through contracts with doctors and partner practices.
2012: SWICA’s health centres begin operating as an independent company under the name santémed Gesundheitszentren AG.
2013: The cooperation between SWICA and Provita is stepped up: Provita is integrated into the SWICA Group.
2015: A 70% stake in santémed is sold to Migros subsidiary Medbase, to allow for more vigorous expansion of the health centres.
2016: SWICA becomes the first health insurance company to introduce a pharmacy model. With its Medpharm basic insurance model, customers can consult a TopPharm pharmacy or call santé24 as a first port of call. Going to see a doctor is the next step – if necessary. The model seeks to counter the trend towards rising healthcare costs.
2019: The santé24 online practice receives a practice licence. This means that santé24 doctors can now offer services such as prescribing medication and issuing sick notes in digital form.
2022: SWICA, the Kantonsspital Winterthur hospital and Medbase jointly build an integrated healthcare system in the Winterthur region, with the focus squarely on patients’ health. The Trio+ partners want to ensure high-quality medical provision over the long term.
2022: Medbase, Hirslanden, Groupe Mutuel, Helsana and SWICA come together to form a company to develop a digitally enabled healthcare ecosystem. The aims of the joint project, named Compassana, are to optimise the coordination of medical care in order to improve the quality of treatment and make processes more efficient.
2023: Psychiatrie Baselland and SWICA establish a joint subsidiary under the name WorkMed AG. The joint venture seeks to offer more comprehensive solutions to the ever-growing number of people who become unable to work because of mental health problems.
