Poor posture: how to prevent it

Do you suffer from neck pain, tense shoulders or have difficulty breathing? Maybe it's because of poor posture. In this challenge you'll learn about the most common postural problems and how to counteract them.

You might be familiar with this scenario: you're sitting on the sofa and just want to check the weather forecast on your smartphone. Then you check your emails and quickly scroll through Instagram. Oops, an hour has already gone by. Your head is bent forward the whole time. Sitting for prolonged periods combined with a lack of exercise, can also lead to pain, muscle tension and poor posture over time. These usually develop gradually. That’s why it’s important to address these issues early. You can find out here which positions are the most common.

Poor posture in the lower and upper back…

One of the most common postural problems is a hollow back. Your pelvis tilts forward, causing an excessive arch inthe lower back. A hollow back is caused by prolonged standing and sitting combined with weak core muscles. As a result, your lower back is placed under significant strain, which can lead to pain. Another common postural issue is a rounded upper back. Here, your thoracic spine is overly curved and your shoulders roll forward. This postural problem is usually due to tight, shortened chest muscles and weakened back muscles.

…and in the cervical spine

Your cervical spine is particularly susceptible to postural problems. With a forward head posture, your thoracic spine rounds forward and your head protrudes in front of your body. This places strain on the muscles at the back of your neck, while the muscles at the front weaken over time. A non-ergonomic workplace setup can further contribute to this problem. With the so-called "text neck", frequently looking down at your smartphone places nearly five times more strain on the spine and surrounding muscles than looking straight ahead. This can lead to severe pain in the long term.

How poor posture develops gradually

Your musculoskeletal system adapts to your posture. If you remain in the same position for hours and don't move enough, your muscles will become shorter and weaker. In addition: many everyday movements are unilateral, meaning your muscles aren't used evenly. This causes muscular imbalances and can lead to poor posture. Stress also plays a role. During stressful periods, you often unknowingly raise your shoulders or make yourself smaller. This posture can set in over time.

Health implications of poor posture

You might have already experienced how these types of postural issues can quickly lead to tense muscles and limited mobility. It can also affect your breathing because your chest has less space. If poor posture sets in, it can result in headaches, dizziness and chronic pain. So it's worth doing something about it early on.

Countermeasures against poor posture

The most important step is being aware. Keep checking in with your body. Are you sitting up straight? Is your head sitting atop the extension of your spine? Are your shoulders relaxed? Regular exercise can help compensate for poor posture. Stand up more often, stretch, and walk a few steps. Ideally, you should incorporate a few stretches in between as well. Strengthen your core muscles. A strong core supports your back and automatically promotes a more upright posture.

Of course, your workplace also plays an important role. If you work at a desk, the screen should be positioned directly in front of you, with the top edge at eye level. Keep your feet flat on the floor. Another little everyday trick: imagine an invisible string gently pulling you upward from the top of your head. This automatically straightens your posture and relaxes your shoulders.

It pays to keep going

Improving your posture doesn't happen overnight, but with a little practice, it will become a habit. Small adjustments in daily life can make a big difference. Your body will thank you with greater flexibility, less pain and more energy. Stay with it – it’s worth it.
