Six per cent of Swiss people are allergic to house dust mites. Symptoms can occur at any age or any time of year. It's not possible to get rid of these tiny creatures completely, but you can keep them under control. SWICA has a few tips for you.

What to do about dust mites

House dust mites reproduce fastest in warm conditions and when humidity is above 50%. That's why the aha! Swiss Allergy Centre recommends keeping room temperature at a constant 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. Brief but intense airing (also known as "impact ventilation", or "shock airing") around three times a day for five to ten minutes can lower the humidity.

House dust mites feel most at home in mattresses and bedclothes such as pillows, duvets and pyjamas, so these should be protected with mite-proof coverings and washed regularly at 60 degrees. The bedroom's not the only place where house dust mites thrive. They can also be found in the living room.

The dust on carpets, curtains and upholstery facilitates the spread of allergens. Excreted by the mites in their faeces, these adhere to dust particles and are carried on the air, which is then inhaled by allergy sufferers. That's why it's important to wipe surfaces regularly with a damp cloth. When vacuuming, a HEPA filter can help, as this traps the tiniest dust, pollen and mould particles.

If you live at more than 1200 metres above sea level you can count yourself lucky, as the mites can't reproduce at such high altitude.

Typical symptoms

According to the Swiss Allergy Centre, the symptoms of house dust mite allergy typically include: 

• a runny or blocked nose
• sneezing
• itchy, red or watery eyes

The symptoms are usually worse in the morning. Skin rashes and allergic asthma are possible delayed reactions.
