Vaccination is the most effective way of protecting against infectious diseases. However, the vaccination of infants and small children throws up questions for many parents. The current health tip tells you where to find the answers.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) publishes the Swiss vaccination schedule at the beginning of each year. It lists all the recommended vaccinations for infants, children and adults of all ages. The objective of the vaccination schedule is to provide the best possible protection for the population as a whole.
Vaccinating your child doesn't just protect him or her against infectious diseases: it also ensures that pathogens are not passed on to others. This helps prevent diseases from spreading. One beneficial side effect is that people who cannot themselves be vaccinated against infectious diseases, such as individuals whose immune system is compromised following cancer treatment, are also protected.
