Swiss public transport: gaps in mountainous areas 

In many remote regions of the Swiss Alps, travel by public transport is limited. This often means it is only possible to reach attractive destinations by car. This leads to heavily congested mountain roads, overcrowded car parks and additional pressure on sensitive natural areas, especially on nice days. It also makes it harder to plan flexible hikes from A to B. 

This is where the Bus alpin association comes in. Working with partners in 18 Swiss regions, it creates demand-driven public transport services in areas where regular connections are lacking – tailored to the local circumstances and offering a sustainable alternative to cars. 

What your community coins are doing

Your community coins help Bus alpin to secure and further develop its services in the mountains – in terms of finance, organisation and communication.

1. Co-financing services in mountain regions 
   Many Bus alpin routes are not subsidised by the state and are supported by less well-off mountain communities. Your support helps to make these important connections possible. 
2. Networking and raising awareness 
   Bus alpin raises awareness of sustainable mobility in sensitive mountain areas and encourages the exchange of ideas and information among mountain enthusiasts. 
3. Strengthening solidarity between urban and rural areas 
   Contributions from the Mittelland make a noticeable difference. They take the pressure off regional organisations and make the effects of solidarity tangible. 
4. Targeted improvement and expansion of services 
   Bus alpin supports regions in the development, operation and expansion of bus routes. With additional resources, new services can be created and existing ones optimised.
