Fibromas, more commonly referred to as skin tags, often occur under the armpits or around the groin. This health tip explains what these unsightly tags are and how you can get rid of them.
Skin tags sometimes look a bit like warts, but they aren't the same thing. They consist of connective tissue and fat cells and usually grow to only a few millimetres in size. They often occur where areas of skin rub together, such as under the armpits, on the neck or even under the breasts. They're usually harmless and don't cause pain.
It's not yet fully understood why skin tags develop. However, certain factors such as genetic predisposition, age and hormonal changes may increase the likelihood that they will appear.
Although they can be unsightly, skin tags aren't usually problematic from a medical point of view. So it's not absolutely necessary to remove them, but many people choose to have them removed for aesthetic reasons.
You shouldn't attempt to remove a skin tag yourself or try home remedies such as apple cider vinegar, thread or sharp objects. This can lead to inflammation, infection, scarring or unnecessary pain. Only a qualified professional can safely remove skin tags. This usually involves surgical excision, laser treatment or electrocautery. All these are outpatient procedures and generally well tolerated.
