Optimum protection for your child

Vaccination is the most effective way of protecting against infectious diseases. However, the vaccination of infants and small children throws up questions for many parents. The current health tip tells you where to find the answers.

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) publishes the Swiss Vaccination Plan at the beginning of each year. It lists all the recommended vaccinations for infants, children and adults of all ages. The objective of the vaccination plan is to provide the best possible protection for the population as a whole.

Vaccinations for children
When you have your child vaccinated, you don’t just protect it against infectious diseases, you also ensure that pathogens are not passed on to others. This helps prevent diseases from spreading. One beneficial side effect is that people who cannot be vaccinated against infectious diseases (e.g. individuals with a compromised immune system following cancer treatment) are also protected.

Questions about vaccinations for children?
Do you have questions about vaccinations for children? No problem. The sante24 free helpline for children's vaccinations has been available since 1 November 2018. Every Wednesday afternoon between 12:30 and 14:30 you can put any questions you may have around this topic to a paediatrician. If you would like to take advantage of this service – which is initially only available in German – you can arrange an appointment.

The electronic vaccination card
The FOPH also provides the extremely helpful electronic vaccination card which shows the vaccinations that are useful and necessary for a child. It also shows which vaccinations a child has already received. By doing so it helps prevent duplicate or unnecessary vaccinations. You can also set up an email or text reminder function so that no booster shots are missed. Use of the platform is free of charge. If, however, you do not wish to enter all the vaccination data yourself, a specialist can do it for you. The associated costs are low. Having previous vaccinations checked and confirmed by a specialist is also subject to charge. You can find out more about the electronic vaccination card at: www.meineimpfungen.ch

If you have any further questions about your health, you can ask the doctors and medical staff at the sante24 health advice helpline for expert advice – free of charge, 24 hours a day. On request, sante24 can also make a doctor’s appointment for you. Phone +41 (0)44 404 86 86. SWICA customers can also use the BENECURA medical app to carry out a digital SymptomCheck of potential illnesses and receive recommendations about what to do next. During a phone call with sante24, customers can decide for themselves whether the information provided in SymptomCheck is to be released to sante24.
