Cool drinks for hot days

The heat of summer can make you tired and listless. If you’re not lucky enough to have a cold lake, river or swimming pool to jump into, fruity summer drinks can help you keep your cool.

For many people, an ice-cold beer is the ideal summer thirst-quencher. But the combination of alcohol and tropical temperatures can be dangerous. If you’re looking for a pleasant way to cool down and perk up, it’s better to go for a non-alcoholic option.

Smoothies

Overwhelming heat leaves most people feeling very thirsty but not so hungry. A smoothie is a light, fruity summer drink that not only quenches your thirst, but satisfies your appetite. Why not try a smoothie with seasonal fruit?
Recipe: Apricot and raspberry smoothie (1 portion)

Ingredients
150ml milk
50g apricots
50g raspberries
A little honey or maple syrup

Method
Purée the fruit. Then blend in the milk. Sweeten with honey or maple syrup to taste. Drink right away!

Ice tea

How about an apple and peppermint ice tea to help you perk up? It’s refreshing, low in calories if you make it without sugar, and great for hot summer’s days.
Recipe: Apple and peppermint ice tea (around 1 litre)

Ingredients
0.5l apple juice
0.5l peppermint tea
Lemon juice and ice cubes to taste

Method
Make up the peppermint tea as per the instructions on the package, and leave it to cool. Mix with apple juice, adding lemon juice if preferred. Add ice cubes.

Don’t have time to make it yourself? For an easier alternative you can also try:

  • Ready-made apple spritzer
  • Unsweetened coconut water
  • Elderflower syrup with ice cubes
  • Ice tea
  • Milkshakes
