Cashless prescriptions

With your SWICA Insurance Card, you can fill prescriptions at Swiss pharmacies without having to pay at the counter. The payment will be settled directly between the pharmacy and SWICA, and if a co-payment is due, SWICA will bill you for it later.

Emergency medical data

Emergency medical data can be stored on the card. This can include: transplant data, allergies, medication, vaccinations, blood group, information about the insured person’s living will, organ donor card and details of personal and medical contacts. This emergency medical data can only be read and written by authorised service providers with their own electronic ID – and only at the request of the insured person. SWICA has no access to the emergency medical data.

However, this service is not currently offered by a large number of providers. To find out more, insured persons should contact the institutions in question directly.

For the time being it makes good sense to have a reference to the ruling or even a hard copy of the ruling with you, because there is no guarantee that the doctor will be able to access the data on the card. This is sure to change in the future when this form becomes more widespread.

Please note:

  • If a card is replaced, the data must be re-entered.
  • The emergency data can be protected by means of the PIN/PUK, but this is not recommended.

PUK (Personal Unblocking Key)

The PUK is required whenever data needs to be protected using a PIN. Please store your PUK securely. The eight-digit PUK will be sent to you along with the card and is printed on the card holder below the card. Each family member has his/her own PUK. SWICA does not know the PUK.

Questions and answers

Who do I ask if I have questions about my Insurance Card or insurance?
If you have any questions about your insurance cover or your Insurance Card, please contact the 24-hour customer service or your personal customer service. The sante24 helpline provides advice on health-related issues.

What data is saved on the microchip?
In accordance with the provisions of the Swiss Federal Office for Public Health (FOPH), the microchip contains the same administrative data that is printed on the insurance card. Depending on the scope of insurance, you can therefore obtain medication at a pharmacy without having to pay for it directly.

I already have a SWICA Insurance Card and have just been sent a new one. Do I still need the old one?
No. Either the old card was valid only for a limited time, or your cover has changed in such a way that a new card had to be issued. Please destroy the old card.

What do I need to do if the Insurance Card is lost?
Please contact SWICA Client Services. You will find the address of your personal Client Services office on insurance documents such as your policy, premium invoice, benefit statement, etc. Or you can order a new card online.

The whole family is insured with SWICA but not everyone has the same card. How come?
Insured persons with global private hospitalisation insurance have access to outstanding medical treatment around the world. This added value is reflected in the specially designed Insurance Cards if the insured person has also taken out basic health insurance with SWICA.

BestMed partners

SWICA maintains a BestMed partnership with leading hospitals in Switzerland. For more information about the current BestMed partners, call the SWICA BestMed number 0800 40 20 10 or visit us at www.swica.ch/bestmed

Medical emergencies abroad

SWICA is there for you if you face an emergency abroad. It issues cover notes for hospital treatment around the clock and makes quick and safe arrangements to get you back to Switzerland. You will be treated by the best doctors and benefit from full financial protection.

The reverse side of the card is the European insurance card. It enables doctors, hospitals and other providers to settle the costs of emergency treatment within the EU/EFTA area with SWICA directly, which means you won’t have to make any payment – except for eventual co-payments.
